Sage Shadoan
EVALUATION PROJECT ASSOCIATE
Sage Shadoan has a background in Psychology with a Master’s in Sociology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Their time in academia has granted them several opportunities to hone various skills whether it be training show horses at a Clydesdale farm in Alabama or co-authoring various papers on clergy member’s health outcomes or LGBTQ experiences in the South. While she has various research interests spanning health, health disparities, and religion, their master’s thesis focused on how perceptions of air and water pollution impacted the environmental attitudes of biblical literalists. Outside of work Sage’s passions lie in activism and she is involved in local grassroots movements that focus on creating equitable access to housing. For fun you can find them blocking for Lincoln’s No Coast Roller Derby Team where she is known as “Whiskey” on the track.

What brought you to MERC?
After leaving my graduate school program, I was looking for a job in a field that would be the perfect introduction to working in academia.
What topic could you talk enthusiastically about for hours?
For hours I could talk about the perseverance of people from the South from several different angles, specifically around how large coaling companies came in and created company towns. In relation to this conversation, I can weave in information about health, sexuality, and environmental degradation.
What historical figure would you choose to have dinner/drinks with?
If I could sit down with a historical figure, I would sit down with Bob Ross. He is sort of historical- but I believe him to be a kind soul and would love to talk with him because I want to know more about his life and experiences.
